Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, 2019
Uzta/The Harvest is the latest project of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Mural Itinerary (IMVG). It was a complex participatory workshop involving more than 10 neighborhood associations and collectives. It not only produced a monumental mural but also a parallel website, featuring interviews and images of the process. The goal was to gather ideas from people in the neighborhood and produce works of art that conveyed something new, something common, something that would make us all think of how we live and who we are in relation to eachother.
In the mural image, we see a matryoshka as the central figure, a symbol of the inner lives and experiences that we all contain. It is decorated with the elements of water and earth, and falls open onto a board that could be the board of life, with stairs going up and slides going down. It is a surrealist mural where nothing is accidental and everything is enriched by the contributions and hands of the neighborhood.
